Cell Phone Service Providers Make Me Ill

I swear I have a near allergic reaction when I get anywhere near cell phone service providers and their ridiculously long contracts with all kinds of crazy fine print.  As much as I think cell phones are the coolest gadgets ever invented, I put off having one for years, because of the contracts.  They were just too expensive, too restrictive, and went on for far to long.  As a result, after all these years, I’m only on my second phone, and I’ve never signed a contract with anyone.  My first phone was a pay as you go plan, that I could simply opt out of my not buying minutes for it anymore.  I hadn’t heard of sim only deals at the time.  Which is exactly what I did after a year or two.  At the time I was traveling for work a lot, so the phone made sense.  Once that stopped, I simply stopped using the phone.

For a number of years afterwords, I simply didn’t have a cell phone.  Well, just about 8 months ago, my work required that I be more accessible, so I started shopping around for a phone.  What I really wanted, was more of a mobile computer, so I ended up buying a N900 by Nokia.  None of the service providers where I live actually carried the phone, so I had to special order it online.  So, basically, I paid full price for it, and started looking for sim only contracts with the providers where I live.  I found one that worked well for me, and got my N900 setup pretty quick.

It currently works great, and I have the added benefit of not having to sign a contract with my carrier.  I like that.  I love the phone as well to.  You don’t see many of them around, and people are always asking about it.  It’s a real geeks phone.  Actually the N900 is more a computer than a phone, but it does do both.

I have a confession to make.  I’m seriously addicted to gadgets.  I just love shiny new digital toys.  It doesn’t matter whether they’re computers, smart phones, cameras, hard drives, thumb drives, or mother boards.  There always seems to be something I’m dreaming of buying (or receiving).  It could be due to the fact the the list of new gadgets never seems to end.  Manufacturers seem to keep finding a way to entice us.  One that’s on my wish list these days, is a good multi screen video card.  I have just the one LCD on my computer right now, and the video card can handle two.  The problem is, that buying a second LCD just hasn’t made it high enough on my priority list to break into the spendable section of my budget.  But, the other day I see ATI has a new card that’s capable of handling 3 LCD screens of varying sizes.  That setup just looked so sweet.  I think my budget may just get blown this month.

Another item I’ve been looking for is a good 1tb external hard drive.  As much as I like the idea of having that much space, maybe even more with a few of the 1tb drives in a RAID array, it seems hard to find reliable drives.  I seem to be acquiring a lot more video and music files on my computer, and I’m kinda getting tired of having to clean stuff off my hard drive all the time.  I’ a bit of a pack rat after all.

Well, the list does seem to go on.  I think my biggest problem, is not having enough of a budget to buy all the stuff.  Gonna have to work a bit harder I guess.  Part of the problem, is that for me gadgets really don’t save my time.  Sure, I know they’re promoted as time saving devices, but that’s no fun.  What’s the point of having all these toys, if you don’t get to spend more time playing with them.  Take my new Canon flatbed scanner for example.  The day after I got it, I started going through all those albums of photo albums that have been filing the closets around my place.  A week later, and I’m still about half way through.  Crazy huh?
